Why my teen writer knows more than ABC, Romenesko and The Times: Around Journalism
A budding high school journalist once submitted a story to me with the following lead (slightly paraphrased):
“When people think of Mexico, they think of partying, underage drinking and poverty.”
I reminded the teen that, particularly in California, many people also think of Mexico as home. It provided a good lesson for her and the rest of my young staff on the dangers of making generalizations in print (and life).
I thought of that lesson this morning as I browsed coverage of a Morgan Stanley report, written by 15-year-old intern Matthew Robson, about media consumption by teenagers. Among his conclusions:
- Most teenagers nowadays are not regular listeners to radio.
- Teenage boys (generally) watch more TV when it is the football
season. (The writer is English, so I assume he means soccer.) - PC gaming has little or no place in the teenage market.
The report, titled “How Teenagers Consumer Media,” was described in a story in The Times (U.K.) That story, in turn, was cited by Romenesko this morning. A Google news search also found stories on ABC News and in the San Francisco Chronicle. Reuters, the Financial Times, PC Advisor and the BBC have carried it. TG Daily used the headline “Teen tells Morgan Stanley the obvious.”
Apparently, however, none of these outlets read the actual report, which states:
At the vanguard of this digital revolution are teenagers.
While their habits will obviously change (especially when
they start employment), understanding their mindset
seems an excellent way of assessing how the media
landscape will evolve. To this end, we asked a 15 year
old summer work intern, Matthew Robson, to
describe how he and his friends consume media.
Without claiming representation or statistical accuracy,
his piece provides one of the clearest and most thought
provoking insights we have seen. So we published it.
In other words, instead of doing any actual research whatsoever on what could be one of the most important business issues of our time, Morgan Stanley walked down the hall and told their intern to write a report. It sounded cool so they didn’t bother to fact-check it. They didn’t look into the friends described by the intern. They don’t even know if the intern has any friends. They don’t know if any of what he said is true. They just regurgitated the information he provided.
Then the media did the same thing.
It makes me wonder if tomorrow’s New York Times will report that many in this country think of partying when they think of Mexico.
