Makin’ money, gettin’ paid from a newspaper Web site: Around Journalism
Remember that whole “You are not the Wall Street Journal” thing from a few weeks back? It’s still true. Most newspapers will find that pay walls, online subscription fees and micropayments will scare away users. (Remember what the New York Times said two whole years ago?)
But that doesn’t mean mid-size newspapers can’t make money off the Web. There are revenue opportunities online. To take advantage of those opportunities, you have to accept some basic facts about the online world.
1. The era of newspaper barons is over. Never again will owning a newspaper allow you to build a giant mansion near the sea where you can keep the toy sled you cherished as a child. The profit margin just won’t be there.
You will, however, be able to make enough money to maintain a middle-class lifestyle while providing an important public service. You know, like your reporters have been doing for the past few decades.
2. A Web site is not a newspaper. That might sound obvious to the handful of people who read this blog (hi mom!), but it’s a revolutionary idea in newspapers. Because the Internet can display text and photos like print, the industry has largely treated the Internet like print. Most content is published on newspaper Web sites at a certain time each morning, as if it is the morning edition. Users typically can’t customize their experiences. Interactivity is limited to user forums. And advertisers are charged an arm and a leg and have very few display options. (We’ll get back to advertising in a bit.)
The reality, however, is that the Internet is not print. It’s a distinct news medium that deserves to be considered a contemporary of print, television and radio. Like each of those mediums, the Internet has its own distinct rules and best practices. The Internet prioritizes speed over details (you can fill in details later online), allows for more interaction between users and content and provides the opportunity for users to customize the way they consume content.
When you grasp those concepts, you’re a step closer to understanding how your online customers behave, which puts you a step closer to making money.
3. Marketing is more important than ever. Given that newspapers once helped start an actual war as a marketing stunt, it’s amazing to think that most local newspaper companies today seem to have forgotten how to sell themselves. Then again, they really haven’t needed marketing for the past few decades. They were the Local Newspaper. Everyone knew that if you were smart and wanted to get ahead in life, you read your Local Newspaper.
And there was only one Local Newspaper in most communities. As a result, newspapers had no need for marketing.
Today, however, newspapers face more competition than ever. Readers have access to social networking Web sites, cell phones, Hulu and other new media which can suck up more of their free time. Newspapers now must convince consumers to spend more time reading the news and less time uploading vacation photos to Facebook.
That starts with better marketing of newspaper Web sites. Newspapers need to let consumers know their Web sites exist and deserve a look. It’s not a given any more.
4. Advertising is not dead. Most newspapers seem to be giving up on Internet advertising before they even explore its potential. They’ve barely scratched the surface of what they can offer customers through online advertising.
The reason for this goes back to fact no. 2. Newspapers saw online advertising and thought it was the same as print advertising. Inches were pixels, circulation was CPM. It all seemed to make sense at the time.
When businesses balked at the rates and the seemingly limited reach of online banner ads, however, newspaper execs quickly gave up on Internet advertising. They’re now hailing micropayments as the industry’s savior.
Meanwhile, Google proved that online advertising works and has made billions in revenue from it. The company did so by approaching advertising from an online, interactive perspective. The Internet allows users to tell Google.com what they are interested in; the Web site simply responds with ads for products based on those interests.
And perhaps best of all, Google allows advertisers to set their own rates and requires them to pay only if the advertising pays off. It doesn’t matter if your budget is $100,000 or $100, you can afford Google AdWords.
True, local newspaper sites will never have the reach of Google. As a result a newspaper site will never make Google-type revenue and create a town in California to serve as its office building. But this gets me back to point no. 1 – you don’t need to make Google bank to live comfortably and provide a public service.
Applying Google’s online-friendly, user- and customer-first philosophy to your newspaper site’s advertising can allow you to do just that.
