Video: Beard contest finals

The finals of the newsroom beard contest were held March 5. Did I come back strong in the second half of the month to take the title? What did one beardless contestant do to charm the judges and earn accolades? And what about the nagging rumors about a performance enhancing substance? Watch this video for more...

Beard contest rankings!

It's week three of The Record's beard contest, and my plans to regularly post video blogs has been foiled by by deadlines and short weeks due to holidays. I do have a special video blog planned that I hope to have up by the end of the week. I've also continued to shoot video daily for the stop-motion video I plan to post when the contest has ended.

Meanwhile, ianhillmedia.com is happy to present a post by its first-ever guest blogger: Record Editor Mike Klocke. Here are Mike's beard contest rankings; they're sort of like the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll rankings, only better.

More test photos in downtown Stockton and a lighting lesson

The light was somewhat warm on Thursday morning, so I decided to take a few minutes before work and walk down Lafayette Street in downtown Stockton to shoot some photos. I focused on the parking meters, which I always thought were visually interesting - the yellowish rust and red "Time Expired" marker provide a nice contrast with the steel gray of the meter casing.

Test photos in downtown Stockton

Like Record photographer Clifford Oto, I was inspired by the clouds that marked the skies around San Joaquin County this week. Unlike Cliff, however, I lack skill with a camera. I'm still learning.

After I left the gym Thursday and Friday morning I spent a few minutes taking test photos of the sky in downtown Stockton as seen looking east on Main Street from Hunter Square. Most of the photos I shot Thursday looked like this.

Video blog: Day one of the beard contest, and organizing social media

Social media can get pretty complicated. I have a relatively small social media presence - the links/icons in the sidebar at left, plus Flickr - but at times I've forgotten how each of my pages or sites are connected.

Take, for example, the video blog below, which I uploaded to Youtube yesterday and intended to post here today. A few hours after the video was on Youtube I received a message from my sister on Facebook saying she had watched it. I had forgotten that I had a feed from Youtube to Facebook, and it probably cost ianhillmedia.com a few pageviews.

It's something I'll keep in mind in the future. Perhaps I need to create a flowchart mapping out the connections between my social media pages.

Video: “We have to find a way to customize every user’s experience”

This video by Amani Channel has its issues - he spends the first 50 seconds or so reciting his resume - but it also sends a clear, important message: The user has to come first in today's news business.

Innovation and the lessons of Rob Curley at Lasvegassun.com

In 2007, as we began working on 209Vibe.com, a friend told me I should check out self-described Internet punk Rob Curley. Curley had been the online editor at the Lawrence, Kan., Journal-World, and my friend recommended I research (what I was told was) his work on Lawrence.com. The site was, and still is, a model for hyperlocal entertainment coverage. It's interesting, engaging and its design always seems to be ahead of the curve.

Curley later went on to other media companies in Kansas and Florida before joining Washingtonpost.Newsweek and, in 2008, Lasvegassun.com. There he's continued to earn accolades and, according to a story this week on Lasvegascitylife.com, he's ruffled his fair share of feathers. The story says in part that Curley's Web-first emphasis as well as his efforts to generate revenue have earned him the scorn of some in the newsroom.

ianhillmedia.tumblr.com

Over the past few months I've been intrigued by the growing popularity of the free blogging platform tumblr. In some ways - OK, many ways - it resembles Blogger.com; tumblr and Blogger both bring together blogging and social networking in a site that is incredibly easy to personalize and use. They allow users to modify and create their own page themes while also following their friends and keeping up with their blog posts.

Blogger and tumblr differ, however, in their presentation and how they are being used. Unlike Blogger, where the text is the star, Tumblr focuses on visuals and design. Many tumblr templates feature dominant, chunky fonts on simple yet eye-pleasing backgrounds - like American Apparel ads without the nudity.

Tumblr users seem to have picked up on this idea and are focusing on visuals on the site. Take, for example, former 209Viber and local musician Dan Faughnder's tumblr page, which has a large image in every post.

Concert photos and working with angles, light and objects

I faced some new challenges as I practiced on my photography skills last night during a concert at the Plea for Peace Center in Stockton. First, I needed to judge the lighting and pick a good angle for my shots. Fortunately, the lighting and setting at the venue is easy to work with and can make an amateur look like a pro. Promoter Middagh Goodwin has floodlights at either end of the stage pointing at the performers, and the back wall of the venue is painted black, which helps add shadow and depth to most photographs.

Again, that's most photographs. You also can easily mess up if you're standing next to the light when you shoot, as your subject will be too bright and appear flat. It's something I realized as I photographed Scott Bartenhagen, the show's opening act. Early on I also struggled with the placement of the microphone, which probably is a common challenge for most photographers at concerts. From where I was standing the microphone often blocked the lower portion of Bartenhagen's face.

Creating the elements of a new media story

An ideal news article has three elements: Text, photos and multimedia features. Over the past few years I’ve been working to put together a toolkit that would allow me to produce each of those elements for Recordnet.com and The Record.

The first item in the kit was a MacBook Pro for writing text while out of the office, if necessary. Then a Pentax K200 digital camera was added for taking photos. This Christmas I was able to complete the kit with a Flip HD camera for multimedia.

My first test of the kit came Jan. 5, when I brought my cameras to the Andrew Jackson Jihad concert at the Plea for Peace Center in Stockton. It resulted in a blog about weeknight entertainment in the city that you can find here.

I discovered that producing the text and video for the blog was relatively easy, as I have experience with both. Taking photos, however, was a challenge that involved making a complicated connection between the light, the subject and the technology of the camera. It’s as much of an art as it is a science, and it gave me additional respect for the great news photogs I know and admire.
